Birth of the Blues

In her Birth of the Blues show, Catherine intersperses entertaining historical narrative with rich vocals to illustrate some of the musical influences of jazz, blues & gospel on the music of the 20th century.

Her presentation, which includes examples of ragtime, gospel, jazz & blues music, highlights the works of such leaders as Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday & Duke Ellington.

STORIES FROM WEST AFRICA & THE CARIBBEAN
An accomplished and talented artist, Whiteman delights in telling stories to children of all ages. She combines storytelling with creative dramatics, making storytelling an interactive art.

She engages imaginations, taking listeners into the world of the story & guiding them to create that world with movement, sound & song. Her repertoire includes all kinds of stories from real & imagined worlds.

Along with the stories and percussion, she can also include steel pan musician Rick Garcia, to expose the children to authentic Caribbean music and rhythms.

In this program, she introduces children to the literature of the area. Cathy makes the children aware that she finds all her stories in books in order to stress the importance of reading

Sojourner Truth
A dramatic one-woman show that has thrilled and inspired audiences of all ages.

Based on the play A WOMAN CALLED TRUTH, Whiteman's 45-minute presentation uses dialogue and song to illustrate how Sojourner Truth's early experiences determined what she would ultimately become: a famous speaker and a well-known public figure.

Catherine performs Birth of the Blues at TCC Southeast Campus

The Texas-based actress, singer and writer, has appeared in a variety of roles on Dallas-Fort Worth stages, as well as commercials and television programs such as WALKER-TEXAS RANGER and SONS OF THUNDER.

Cathy coordinated the highly acclaimed program, WE STAND ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS, which was presented at the Carpenter Performance Theatre at Irving Arts Center in Irv ing. 

WE STAND ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS uses music, dance and poetry to celebrate the history and contributions of families from the Bear Creek Community of Irving.
